Lightning protection assessment and design

Define the risk-assessment, external protection, bonding and surge-protection scope for your installation.

Start with the structure and its use

Provide structure dimensions, location, occupancy, operating use, incoming services and the consequence of loss. Include hazardous-area information where relevant, existing protection drawings and the client’s engineering requirements.

A risk assessment should document the provenance of the input data and the options evaluated. A calculator output without its assumptions is not a complete engineering deliverable.

Agree the protection package

Specify whether the appointment includes risk assessment, external lightning protection layouts, bonding, separation assessment, surge-protection coordination, material schedules and construction details. Identify interfaces with roofing, structural works, electrical distribution and earthing.

The project basis should state applicable SANS 10313 and SANS/IEC 62305 requirements and editions. The standard list does not replace structure-specific assessment or installation verification.

Design review and handover

Agree the drawing and calculation schedule, review stages and required inspection records. The design package should identify unresolved inputs and the evidence needed before final acceptance.

For existing installations, start with an inspection and document review to establish what is actually present. Missing drawings, inaccessible connections and changed building use may alter the investigation required.

Discuss the work package

Send the location, available drawings, engineering decision and required date. We will clarify the inputs and issue a defined scope.
