Earthing design and engineering assessment
Translate measured ground conditions and electrical-system inputs into a defined design and review package.
Establish the design basis
Start with the site layout, soil investigation, earthing arrangement, fault-study results and protection clearing times. Identify normal and credible alternative operating arrangements, existing electrodes and metallic services crossing the site boundary.
An input register separates accepted data from assumptions and outstanding queries. Missing information must remain visible through design review; a plausible calculation cannot compensate for an unsupported input.
Assess the installation as a system
The engineering assessment considers electrode geometry, conductor duty, bonding and relevant touch, step and transferred-potential conditions. An isolated earth-resistance target does not answer all those questions.
Agree the model extent, calculation method and software requirements at appointment. Where a client mandates a specific platform or independent review, include that requirement in the enquiry so suitability can be confirmed before commitment.
Define procurement-ready outputs
The document schedule may include the design basis, calculations, electrode layout, bonding details, materials schedule and installation specifications. Agree revision allowances and interfaces with civil works, protection, lightning protection and electrical installation.
Outputs should identify the input revisions used, unresolved hold points and required installation verification. Procurement release is a separate decision from issuing a preliminary calculation.
Select applicable standards
IEEE 81 addresses grounding measurements; IEEE 80 addresses safety in AC substation grounding. SANS 10199 concerns earth electrodes. Installation and project requirements may also call for IEC 61936-1, EN 50522 and other specified standards. Confirm applicable editions and acceptance criteria in the project design basis.
Keep lightning and commissioning interfaces clear
Lightning protection assessment addresses a related but distinct set of risks and design inputs. Installed-system audits and commissioning compare the constructed system and measurements with the agreed design and acceptance plan.
Discuss the work package
Send the location, available drawings, engineering decision and required date. We will clarify the inputs and issue a defined scope.
